The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, in force since 1 July 2024, has replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860. IPC 160 deals with affray punishment, one of the IPC's offences against the public tranquillity — unlawful assembly, rioting and affray that turn on the number of persons and the common object of the group. The BNS carries affray punishment forward as BNS 194(2) with the same core ingredients, renumbering the provision and tightening the definitions around mob action.
IPC 160 dealt with affray punishment — punishment for committing affray. Until 30 June 2024, every FIR and criminal trial for this offence was registered and prosecuted under this provision of the Indian Penal Code 1860.
No major change. From 1 July 2024, new complaints relating to affray punishment are filed under BNS Section 194(2), while cases registered earlier continue under the old IPC provision as per the saving clause of the BNS.

No. The Indian Penal Code 1860 was repealed and replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 on 1 July 2024. The affray punishment offence earlier in IPC 160 is now governed by BNS 194(2) — pending IPC 160 cases continue, but new FIRs cite BNS 194(2).
