IPC Section 199 (False Declaration) under the old Indian Penal Code 1860 is now covered under Section 236 of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, effective from 1 July 2024.
False statement made in declaration which is by law receivable as evidence
IPC 199 (False Declaration) — false statement made in declaration which is by law receivable as evidence — now maps to BNS Section 236. Key change: Punished as giving false evidence. Punishment under BNS 236: Same.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, in force since 1 July 2024, has replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860. IPC 199 addresses false declaration, part of the IPC's offences against public justice — false evidence, fabrication, screening offenders and similar interference with the justice process. These are carried into the BNS with the same structure, and false declaration is now prosecuted as BNS 236, protecting the integrity of investigations and trials in its own right.
IPC 199 dealt with false declaration — false statement made in declaration which is by law receivable as evidence. Until 30 June 2024, every FIR and criminal trial for this offence was registered and prosecuted under this provision of the Indian Penal Code 1860.
Punished as giving false evidence. From 1 July 2024, new complaints relating to false declaration are filed under BNS Section 236, while cases registered earlier continue under the old IPC provision as per the saving clause of the BNS.

No. The Indian Penal Code 1860 was repealed and replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 on 1 July 2024. The false declaration offence earlier in IPC 199 is now governed by BNS 236 — pending IPC 199 cases continue, but new FIRs cite BNS 236.
